Food safety and standards

The food industry and food supply are essential concerns of MAFF, within a Europe-wide market. MAFF, through the work of its Joint Food Safety and Standards Group, monitors food safety, the quality and choice offered to the consumer, and the nation's nutrition patterns. Public advice on healthy eating goes hand in hand with food safety and hygiene. MAFF plays a leading part in providing information and guidance, aimed at achieving a healthier national diet. The gradual changes in eating habits are continuously surveyed, and the results published.

The Food Safety and Standards pages on our site have been divided into the following subject areas:

Food Standards Agency - provides the latest information on Government proposals to set up a Food Standards Agency

Food Safety - describes the co-ordinated programme of research and monitoring of food supply which MAFF carries out and also has a guide to the UK Food Law

Food Hygiene - information on a number of food safety topics, especially meat hygiene enforcement

Novel Foods - information on how novel foods, including genetically modified foods, are assessed through the work of the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes

Chemicals in Food - information on surveillance and research on a wide range of chemicals in food, together with reports on the work of the Food Advisory Committee

Additives and Labelling - a selection of MAFF's Foodsense Factsheets on food additives and flavourings and information on the 'Better Food Labelling' initiative
