ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON ANIMAL FEEDINGSTUFFS

What is ACAF?

This Committee was set up in June 1999 to advise the Secretary of State for Health, the Minister of Agriculture, Ministers of the Scottish Executive, the National Assembly for Wales and the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Affairs (Northern Ireland) on the safety and use of animal feeds and feeding practices, with particular emphasis on protecting human health and with reference to new technical developments.

Why has it been set up?

The decision to set up this Committee was made following concern about the integrity of animal feeds, particularly over the implications of BSE and the use of genetically modified feed ingredients. The decision was announced in the White Paper, 'The Food Standards Agency: A Force for Change', published in January 1998 and it implements the principal recommendation of the report of the Expert Group on Animal Feedingstuffs, published in July 1992.

What sort of issues will it address?

The Committee's primary purpose will be to advise on the safety and use of animal feed in relation to human health. It will also cover animal health and a wide range of topical issues including advice to UK negotiators on new EC proposals, on animal feed ingredients including genetically modified organisms, labelling and information for purchasers.

Date of the next meeting

The third meeting of ACAF will be held on 2 March 2000.

Consultation on Animal Feed Labelling

ACAF is seeking views on whether changes are necessary to current labelling requirements for animal feedingstuffs. Responses to the consultation document are required by 21 March.
