Consultation exercises


Consultation exercises normally begin with publication of a consultation paper in which the Government sets out its thinking on some policy issue or other legislative proposal, and invites comment from interested bodies and others. The consultation period, during which comments are submitted before a deadline, normally lasts several weeks. Once the deadline has passed, the various comments are considered by the Government in its more formal plans for legislation etc. After this stage, the comments are made publicly available for six months as consultation replies.

MAFF's Whitehall Place library will supply copies of consultation replies on request to personal callers or telephone enquirers (Tel 0645 335577 - local call rates). To avoid delays personal callers should give the library 24 hours' notice of their requirements. An administrative charge to cover the cost of photocopying and postage will apply.
