JOINT FOOD SAFETY AND STANDARDS GROUP

EXPERT GROUP ON VITAMINS AND MINERALS

What is the Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals?

The Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals is a group of independent experts that has been established to consider the safety of vitamins and minerals in supplements sold under food law. The Members of the Group have been drawn from four Government advisory Committees on food and medicine. These are the Food Advisory Committee (FAC), the Committee on the Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT), the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM) and the Committee on the Medical Aspects of Food and Nutrition Policy (COMA). Nutrition and toxicology experts were also selected from nominations by interested parties. Observers representing the four main interest groups, consumers, the food and health food industries and alternative medicine are also present on the Group.

The Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals are expected to complete their work by the end of the year 2000.

The Secretariat for the Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals is part of the Joint Food Safety and Standards Group of the Department of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food.
