ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON THE MICROBIOLOGICAL SAFETY OF FOOD

FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE

1. Attached for the information of Members are :-

· the Food Standards Agency’s press release on the role of the Meat Hygiene Service in uncovering the current foot and mouth disease outbreak. Members will note the final paragraph of this press release which confirms that there is no threat to food safety as foot and mouth disease has no implications for the human food chain; and

· MAFF’s foot and mouth disease briefing covering frequently answered questions including whether people can contract the disease.
